5 Home Insurance Tips for New Home Buyers

by Will Koch

The chaos of buying a new home is tough to explain unless you’ve been through it before. Agent fees, closing costs, inspections, all cash offers, it’s a major financial decision and buying a home is stressful.

We can help with the home buying process and provide you with home insurance information to protect one of the largest purchases of your life.

Follow these tips

Learn the home insurance claim history

When you think you’ve found your dream home, call your insurance agent to learn up to seven years of insurance claims history for the property. By running a Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.) report, your insurance agent can get a comprehensive list of claims so you can verify that proper repairs were made before you make an offer.

Get a home insurance estimate before you buy

When you’re considering monthly costs, look beyond the mortgage. Think about what it costs to upkeep, improve, and protect that house. In addition to applicable property taxes and any homeowner association fees, find out what it will cost to insure the home. Contact your insurance agent for a homeowners insurance quote or start online.

Save money with home insurance discounts

When you’re buying a house, you want to save money wherever you can. Ask your insurance agent about home insurance discounts. If you have both home and car insurance, you could take advantage of multi-policy discounts.

Set your home insurance deductible

A deductible is money you will pay out-of-pocket when you have a claim before your home insurance starts to cover your expenses. If you prefer to have lower premium payments on your home insurance, you might set your deductible higher. However, having a higher deductible means you’ll have to pay more money out of pocket when you file a claim.

Get all the home insurance you need

You have other coverage options to consider that aren’t included in your standard home insurance policy. For example, if you’re buying a house with a basement and sump pump, you and your insurance agent should discuss adding sump pump coverage to your policy. Follow these five home insurance tips to be a more informed homeowner. You’ll feel better about your new home and the home insurance you secure to protect it.
