Can I Drive a Newly Purchased Car Without Insurance?

by COUNTRY Financial

Generally speaking, no, you cannot drive a car without insurance. Almost all 50 U.S. states require auto insurance to drive on public roads, whether the car is newly purchased or otherwise.

While you can technically buy a car without car insurance, you likely won’t be allowed to drive it off the dealer’s property—even if you paid for it.

The good news? Car insurance is relatively easy to purchase, and in many cases, coverage starts immediately.

Do you need insurance to test drive a new car?

While every dealership is different, you generally don’t need car insurance to test drive a car at a dealership. The dealership’s vehicles are typically covered by their own insurance, so as long as you have a valid driver’s license, you should be able to test drive a car. (Remember, though, you can’t buy the car without your own car insurance.)

However, buying a car from a private individual is different—in that case, you will need insurance to test drive the car (assuming the seller allows a test drive), because a private individual does not have dealership insurance.

Adding a new car to an existing policy

Once you’ve bought the car, we recommend adding it to your insurance policy as soon as possible. Many insurers offer a short grace period where your current policy may temporarily cover the new car, but if you miss that window, you could be driving uninsured—which can incur serious consequences. Always check directly with your insurer instead of assuming a grace period applies.

Fortunately, adding a new car to your auto insurance policy is usually easy. You can:

  • Call your insurance agent
  • Use your insurance company’s online portal or mobile app

To add your new car, you’ll simply provide the car’s:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Year
  • VIN

Why you should have insurance on a new car ASAP

We can’t stress this enough: get insurance on your new car right away. Without proper coverage, you’re fully responsible for damages if something happens—even if you’re driving straight home from the dealership.

Here’s why: Let’s say your old car was worth $15,000. Your new one is worth $40,000. If your new car is totaled on the drive home before it’s added to your policy, you could be on the hook for the $25,000 difference.

That’s why having car insurance for a new car in place before you pull off the lot can save you from a financial nightmare.

The Keeper®

COUNTRY offers an optional coverage called The Keeper, which is designed specifically for people buying new cars. If your brand-new car is damaged in an accident (and the repair costs exceed the value of the car), The Keeper will pay for another new car of the same make and model.1

It’s a great way to protect the investment you just made. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need to add your new car to your existing auto policy for The Keeper coverage to apply.

Final thoughts

While insurance isn’t usually required to test-drive or buy a car, it is required before you can drive it on your own. From knowing the rules around a test drive to adding a vehicle to an existing insurance policy, planning ahead makes the whole process smoother and safer.
