Does Car Insurance Cover Windshield Replacement?

by COUNTRY Financial

Ever had flying road debris crack your windshield? You’re not alone. It’s important to get it fixed, too—that little crack will grow over time, eventually crawling across your entire windshield.

But does car insurance cover a cracked windshield? If your glass has a small crack but isn’t shattered, try and get it repaired first. You can find a technician who’ll fill the crack with a strong resin.

But you’ll need your windshield replaced if it has more severe damage, and that’s where windshield replacement insurance—also called glass coverage—can help.

When does insurance cover windshield replacements?

Certain types of auto policies include windshield insurance to cover windshield replacement. These are:

  • Comprehensive car insurance: Typically covers windshield replacement when the damage is caused by a rock (or other flying objects), natural disasters, theft or vandalism, animals, and more.
  • Collision insurance: Helps pay the cost of windshield replacement only when it’s damaged in a car accident.

We offer special Windshield Replacement Insurance at COUNTRY Financial as an additional coverage option to your main car insurance policy.

When is windshield replacement not covered?

There are a few situations in which your car insurance coverage might not include the cost of windshield replacement:

  • Incorrect coverage or policy exclusions: If you don’t have comprehensive coverage or your policy simply doesn’t cover it.
  • Pre-existing damage: The windshield was broken when you bought the car.
  • Aftermarket or custom windshields: Voluntary replacement for cosmetic or other reasons when the windshield isn’t broken.

Will I pay my deductible?

In almost all cases, you’ll pay your car insurance deductible to replace your windshield. Insurance will then pay the shop or technician the remaining balance for the job.

Our Windshield Replacement Insurance does not require you to pay your comprehensive coverage deductible.

Final thoughts

If you drive—and keep your car long enough—you’ll probably need to replace your windshield at least once. It’s just the nature of being on the road. But if you have the right car insurance coverage, it likely won’t be a difficult process.

If you’d like to know more about car windshield replacement, talk to your insurance agent today—they can help you get a car insurance quote, determine how much coverage you need and answer any questions.
