June 19, 2025
In towns and cities across the United States, joyful celebrations mark Juneteenth—a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in America. Observed on June 19, Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people were free—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. For generations, Black communities have honored the day with parades, family gatherings, music, and reflections on freedom and resilience.
Though it began as a regional celebration in Texas, Juneteenth has grown into a nationwide recognition of Black history, culture, and progress. It became an official state holiday in Texas in 1980, and momentum steadily built across the country, culminating in its designation as a federal holiday in 2021. Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of our nation’s complex history and the ongoing journey toward equity and justice.
In celebration of Juneteenth, Ryonna Harrison, Security Project Coordinator, and Alex Williams, Corporate Communications Manager, share their personal experiences.
Harrison: “The celebration of freedom. It’s a day that honors resilience and the contributions of African Americans to this country. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in America and that there is additional work to do to build a more equitable future. Understanding the history behind Juneteenth allows us, as a nation, to grow and learn. Ultimately, it’s important to me because I know that I am where I am today because of the sacrifices of others.”
Williams: “Juneteenth (Freedom Day) is a very important timestamp because it officially marks the end of slavery in the U.S. and is a crucial part of American history. Many believe Juneteenth is African American history, which often leads to an educational gap since cultural history (especially history dealing with the enslaved) is not normally taught in the public education system. As a result, Black families must teach this portion of American history at home so our children can understand the struggles, resilience, and cultural significance of African Americans. Ultimately, Freedom Day is important to me because it highlights the significance of freedom, equality, and perhaps more vital—ensures everyone learns a comprehensive and inclusive history. When you understand your own contributions to American history you have the confidence of your place in society.”
At COUNTRY, our unwavering commitment to inclusion is a cornerstone of our Vision and mission and one of our four core Values. Our commitment to inclusion is also a fundamental part of delivering on our strategy, Destination 2030.
We also asked Harrison and Williams to weigh in on how they view and celebrate inclusion.
Harrison: “Inclusion, to me, is an environment where everyone feels respected, empowered, and valued. It ensures that all voices are heard and considered. Differences aren’t just tolerated but are considered strengths. Inclusion has allowed me to feel a sense of belonging and part of the COUNTRY culture. It allows me to contribute and provide my perspective and talents freely to the organization.”
Williams: “For me, inclusion means creating a culture where all voices are heard and valued, regardless of background. This must be an intentional effort on behalf of all, because our natural human biases typically don’t allow inclusion to happen organically. As an African American male in a corporate environment, I’m accustomed to often being the only minority in the room. So, for me, inclusion involves overcoming stereotypes and racial barriers by modeling respect, empathy, and fair practices. We all benefit when everyone contributes to ensuring everyone feels welcomed, respected, and able to contribute fully.”
Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone—as voices like Harrison and Williams remind us, honoring this day means not only reflecting on the past but actively shaping a more inclusive future.
