Prepare for Atlantic Hurricane Season: Check on Insurance Coverages

Bloomington, IL. - The Atlantic 2024 hurricane season officially starts on June 1 and COUNTRY Financial is encouraging those who live in hurricane prone areas to prepare by checking in on their insurance coverages.

“It’s vital to check in with your insurance representative at least annually to discuss your coverages,” said Jesse Kohlbecker, Vice President of Claims and Client Services. “There are many changes that can occur in a year that impact your insurance coverage needs, like upgrades you made to your home or changes in your lifestyle. These check-ins help identify where you’re vulnerable so you can adjust.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above-normal 2024 Atlantic Hurricane season, with La Nina and warmer-than-average ocean temperatures driving tropical activity. NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms, with 8 to 13 of those being hurricanes.

In addition to meeting with your insurance agent, COUNTRY Financial recommends that residents in hurricane prone areas do the following:

  • Take an inventory of household items using photos or video to ease the insurance claim process in the event your home suffers damage from a hurricane
  • Maintain and strengthen your home by cleaning gutters and drains and purchasing hurricane shutters
  • Make copies of important documents and store them in a dry place
  • Create an emergency supply kit with essential items
  • Develop an evacuation route
  • Plan for your pets
  • Have ways to receive local weather alerts

“Hurricanes can cause devastating damage to an individual’s property and finances,” said Jesse Kohlbecker, Vice President of Claims and Client Services at COUNTRY Financial. “Take the time now, before the next hurricane hits, to make sure you are protected with proper insurance coverage and prepared for an evacuation.”

Flood damage is not included in a general home insurance policy, but it is available through the National Flood Insurance Program.  Learn more about how to prepare for hurricane season.
