31 percent of farmers in America are women, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. This National Farm Safety and Health Week, COUNTRY Financial® and the Illinois Farm Bureau are urging women to shift farm safety into high gear.
“The harvest seasons can often be full speed ahead. It is important for all farmers to take even 10 minutes for themselves every day to stay focused and incident free,” says DeAnne Bloomberg, Director of Issue Management at Illinois Farm Bureau. “I want to remind everyone – including moms, grandmas, wives and sisters to take breaks and time for themselves.”
There is no denying that farming is stressful work no matter what role you play on the farm. During the harvest season, it can be a race against weather, but when you are moving too quickly incidents happen.
“At Country Financial and Farm Bureau we recognize the entire family is at work 24/7 to balance the stress of being constantly on call during harvest season,” says Eric Vanasdale, Loss Control Supervisor for COUNTRY Financial. “But the harvest season is a marathon not a sprint and having a clear mind is crucial to safety.”
The following are some simple steps women can take to remain safe this harvest season:
- Stay alert. Being focused is key to a safe harvest season. Scheduling in breaks for yourself every day can help to keep you focused and incident free.
- Keep lines of communication open. The harvest season is hectic. Encouraging conversations and open communication is helpful in balancing stress.
- Manage your expectations. When harvest season hits, days are long, and you can go periods of time without sitting down with your whole family. It is important to be understanding of these long hours and to be a sounding board for your family when you do see them.
