COUNTRY Financial Drone Program

Taking crop adjusting to new heights

Aug. 21, 2017

More COUNTRY Financial drones are soaring above Illinois fields. The insurance and financial services company recently expanded its crop claims drone fleet from four to 12, and increased the number of trained drone pilots to 15.

“We’re excited to be making drones a bigger part of our day-to-day processes,” said Eric Vanasdale, senior loss control representative for COUNTRY Financial. “A crop claims adjuster using a drone can scout three times as many acres as an adjuster on foot. This innovative technology will provide our customers extra peace of mind knowing all their crop damage is accounted for.”

Vanasdale who serves as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Project Lead brought together veteran and new pilots for a training session early this summer. Each pilot took home a drone to use in fields.

Then and now

“Walking large amounts of acreage takes multiple adjusters and many hours to survey fields after storms,” said Todd Manning, a drone pilot and crop adjuster for COUNTRY Financial. “Drone technology is more efficient in conducting field surveys and identifying areas of crop damage and reduces the hours needed to settle a claim. As drone technology improves, there’ll be more opportunities to apply it to crop insurance.”

More drone milestones on the way

For industry experts and customers alike, the drone program represents a step forward in customer service, using some of the most up-to date technology available. Most agree it is exciting to be a part of something that will service customers faster and more accurately.

History of the Program

In 2015 COUNTRY Financial got its start in the UAV area when it became one of the first crop insurers to receive a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) exemption to test drones. Now the organization continues to expand its use the technology and its pilot program in order to continue improving the claims experience for customers.
