The Latest on College Prices

An education plan with COUNTRY can help your child reach his goals

Every year, The College Board conducts a survey to gather pricing information from colleges and universities. The survey for the 2011-2012 school year* confirms that published prices are still going up faster than the rate of inflation.

  • Tuition and fees - The $8,244 average price tag for in-state tuition and fees at public four-year institutions was an 8.3% increase over the previous year. Private institutions raised tuition and fees an average of 4.5%, to $28,500.

  • Room and board - The average charge rose to $8,887 at public schools and $10,089 at private schools.

  • Books and supplies - The average cost was $1,183.

  • Other - Additional expenses for resident students were in the $2,400-$3,200 range.
