Hail, floods and tornadoes rank high on the list of natural occurrences that sometimes damage Midwestern homes, crops and vehicles. However, sometimes Midwesterners forget about the possibility of an earthquake happening in their area.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials predict areas at risk for earthquakes include the New Madrid Seismic Zone in Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas. U.S. Geological Services scientists estimate chances are more than 90 percent for a moderate to severe earthquake to occur in the New Madrid zone within the next 50 years.
Since 1900, earthquakes have occurred in 39 states and caused damage in all 50, according to the Insurance Information Institute. FEMA officials say earthquakes over time have cost $4.4 billion in the United States.
Earthquake coverage for homes and businesses typically comes through an optional endorsement to an insurance policy. The coverage is available for qualified dwellings, personal property and auxiliary private structures.
