What to do After an Auto Crash

More than six million auto crashes occur each year1.  If you are involved in an accident, the best way to handle the situation is to stay calm and to follow these steps:

At the scene

  1. Make sure anyone who is injured receives medical attention.
  2. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers that an accident has occurred.  Do not move your vehicle unless it is blocking traffic.
  3. Call the police, even if the crash is minor.
  4. Write down the following:
    • Names and addresses of anyone involved in the accident, as well as any witnesses.
    • A description of any vehicles involved, specifically noting any damage to the vehicles.
    • The other driver’s license number, license plate number, the name of the other driver’s insurance company, and their policy number.
  5. If possible, take photos of the damage to your car.  Or, draw a sketch of the accident scene and how the accident occurred.  Make a note of the road and weather conditions, too.

Fixing the damage

  1. Call the COUNTRY Helpline®, 1-800-846-0100, at any time of day to report the claim.
  2. You will receive a claim number and an assigned representative for your case.
  3. The claims representative will explain the claims process to you, including your coverages and your deductible.
  4. Generally, an appraiser will assess the damage to your vehicle and determine the amount needed to repair it.  You will receive this amount, minus your deductible.
  5. Take your car to a repair shop of your choice and have the work done.  The shop should contact your appraiser with questions about your estimate before beginning repairs.
