The Latest on College Prices

An education plan with COUNTRY can help your child reach his goals

Every year, The College Board conducts a survey to gather pricing information from colleges and universities. The survey for the 2008-2009 school year* confirms that published prices are still going up faster than the rate of inflation.

  • Tuition and fees - The average increase in in-state tuition and fees at public four-year institutions was 6.4%. The $6,585 price tag represented about one third of students’ overall budgets. Private institutions raised tuition and fees an average of 5.9%, to $25,143.

  • Room and board - The average charge rose to $7,748 at public schools and $8,989 at private schools.

  • Books and supplies - The average cost was $1,077.

  • Other - Additional expenses for resident students were in the $2,200-$2,900 range.
