Advance preparation for an earthquake is crucial because you won't get advance notice before a quake strikes.

The thought of an earthquake probably brings up vivid images of damaged roads and bridges and collapsed buildings. Earthquakes are life-threatening because they strike unexpectedly and leave no time for preparation or evacuation.

Where do earthquakes strike?

Earthquakes are possible in nearly every U.S. region based on the numerous number of fault lines, but according to the U.S. Geological Survey, approximately 80 percent of the world’s largest earthquakes occur along the Pacific Ocean coastline.

Take action to protect your home

The sudden and rapid shaking caused by an earthquake is not something to take lightly. It’s important to take precautionary steps to protect your home from earthquake activity ranging from minor tremors to serious aftershocks.

Tips on what to buckle down

  • Secure heavy and breakable furniture such as shelving, bookcases, mirrors, etc. to walls
  • Attach televisions, desktop computers and small appliances to desks, tables or countertops
  • Place large or heavy objects on lower shelves
  • Secure hanging items such as ceiling fans/lights to your house’s permanent structure
  • Strap the water heater to wall studs
  • Anchor household appliances such as refrigerators to walls using safety cables or straps
  • Install latches on kitchen cabinet doors to keep items in place
